Our Client:

Swansea Building Society was established in 1923 as an independent mutual organisation owned by its members. It operates from branches in Carmarthen, Cowbridge, Mumbles and Swansea, where it also has its head office. The Society has gone through a period of sustained, controlled growth over the last 10 years and has continued to deliver a robust performance while remaining firmly focused on its core purpose of helping members build better futures through trusted, flexible mortgage and savings solutions. In 2025 the Society achieved another year of asset growth reaching £715m, a strong profit performance and a strengthened capital position, reflecting the consistent strength of the Society’s results in recent years.

The Role:

The Society is seeking to recruit a Finance Director to shape and lead the Society's financial strategy, ensuring sustainable growth is supported by a resilient balance sheet, sustainable profitability and a disciplined approach to capital and liquidity management within agreed risk appetite.

The successful candidate will act as a strategic partner to the Chief Executive, Deputy Chief Executive and Board, providing financial insight, constructive challenge and commercial judgement to support the Society's long-term objectives and create sustainable value for members while supporting the Society's mutual purpose.

Provide executive leadership of the Finance function and maintain effective oversight of the Society's financial resilience, prudential planning, treasury activities, regulatory reporting and financial control framework, ensuring governance arrangements remain proportionate to the Society's scale and complexity.

Key responsibilities:

  • Lead the financial strategy of the Society and support the ongoing development of the business model, identifying opportunities for sustainable growth and improved member value.
  • Ensure the Society maintains adequate capital, funding and liquidity resources at all times within approved risk appetite and regulatory requirements.
  • Lead treasury activity, including funding, liquidity, investments, counterparty exposures and interest rate risk management.
  • Lead the Society's relationship with the Bank of England, banking counterparties and treasury service providers.
  • Provide executive oversight of financial performance, budgeting, forecasting, stress testing and medium-term planning.
  • Ensure the integrity of all financial, regulatory, statutory and tax reporting.
  • Deliver timely, accurate and decision-useful management information to the Executive, Board and Committees.
  • Lead strategic capital management, balancing resilience, growth and member value.
  • Provide forward-looking financial insight through scenario analysis and stress testing.
  • Provide executive leadership of first-line financial and portfolio oversight relating to impairment, provisioning methodology and portfolio performance.
  • Maintain effective relationships with regulators and ensure high-quality engagement during supervisory reviews and regulatory interactions.
  • Establish and maintain an effective procurement framework and delegated authority structure.
  • Sponsor the continuous development of finance systems, data quality, automation, reporting capability and financial controls.

About You:

  • Recognised professional accountancy qualification.
  • Significant post-qualification experience in banking, building societies or another prudentially regulated financial institution.
  • Senior responsibility for financial reporting, planning, capital, liquidity and balance-sheet management.
  • Strong working knowledge of PRA and FCA requirements relevant to a deposit taker.
  • Experience presenting to and constructively challenging Boards and Board committees.
  • Experience leading a professional finance team.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain regulatory approval for SMF2.
