Financial Controller

Location : North Cardiff
Type : Permanent
Salary : £45k - £48k

Responsible for the efforts and results of the financial department. Reporting to the Director of Corporate Services (DCS) in regard to all financial and accounting activities. Overseeing financial department staff in day-to-day operations.

The Financial Controller will work closely with all business departments creating a real and active partnership with both operations and SMT. The role is to provide real time support and analysis, to be a trusted adviser and to add value that will assist in decision making. The job holder will require the ability to communicate their message, to understand their audience and deliver the information in a clear and user friendly manner.

Main duties

  • Ensure that all financial transactions are properly recorded, filed, and reported
  • Prepare comprehensive, timely and accurate Monthly Management Accounts
  • Prepare first draft year end Statutory accounts
  • Cash flow forecasting and Treasury Management
  • Supervise and manage financial department staff, motivate and lead finance team members through effective performance management
  • Establish and implement financial reporting systems to comply with regulations and legislation
  • Manage the daily relationship with internal and external audit.
  • Create systems to prevent errors in data collection and calculations
  • Responsible for setting, monitoring and measuring all KPI’s of the function to manage service delivery.  
  • Make process improvements to enhance performance if required and ensure implemented and delivered with regular reviews;
  • Responsible for preparing annual budgets, financial forecasts and plans for long range planning for department and business to be reviewed by DCS, SMT and Board including scenario planning and mitigation action plan;
  • Manage relationships with third parties as necessary, such as HMRC, payroll providers etc
  • Suggest updates and improvements for accounting systems,
  • Assist the DCS in presenting reports to senior executives, stakeholders, and board members
  • Responsibility for ensuring effective procedures are in place for all aspect of the finance function, and are reviewed and up to date;
  • Ad hoc duties as required by the DCS including attending meetings and taking minutes.

The role

  • Interface between finance and operations, improving the impact and understanding of financial reporting on business performance and maintain strong relationships with all managers and their teams;
  • Providing analysis and delivering insight that links financial reports to business strategies;
  • Commercially aware, forward looking and understanding and anticipating the needs of both operations and management;
  • Able to interpret data, order and assess its value and present the findings to the relevant stakeholders in a clear and concise way;
  • Draw on ‘big’ and ‘small’ data, selecting the appropriate tools to analyse and interpret it in an audience-appropriate way;
  • Provide strategic insights across every department of a business, including insights on analysis of operational performance, industry dynamics, macro-economic trends and the competitor landscape;
  • Assist in interpreting, explaining and driving performance within the business function;
  • Assist in supporting and influencing key operational and strategic decisions to add value to the service provided;
  • Advising on key business planning assumptions and opportunities for development;
  • Assist in supporting and documenting system requirements and delivery of any changes in the function;
  • Ensure policies and procedures are in place for all aspect of the finance function, are reviewed and up to date;
  • Assist in managing the relationships between internal and external stakeholders including submitting responses and arranging audit visit to ensure compliance and assurance as per Board and regulatory body requirements;
  • Develop with the DCS the overall Corporate Service team strategy; 
  • Ensure financial statutory returns and relevant statistical, benchmarking and government statutory data completed to deadlines set;
  • Complete Board, funders, Welsh Government reports to strict deadlines for review by DCS before submission;
  • Ensure asset management and component accounting analysed, reviewed, completed and reported on a monthly basis for decisions on replacement, disposal and acquisition and finance reporting requirements including devising KPI’s to monitor and measure this going forward;
  • Assist in ensuring funding available and regularly monitor covenants to comply with loan arrangements and assist in managing the overall relationship with the funders;
  • Complete out turn and WIP report for development projects and assess any new opportunities including liaising with solicitors and development group;
  • Complete financial appraisals and Board reports to assess developments delivered as planned and for future projects;
  • Ensure that process map in place for all processes within the department and that this is reviewed on a regular basis to manage waste and identify improvements in system and processes in future;
  • Ensure reports required by department regularly reviewed to ensure fit for purpose and amend if required;
  • Support the Company Secretary with reporting requirements;
  • Ad hoc duties as required by the DCS (including managing overall resource to deliver ad hoc requirements).

Qualifications/Training

Required

  • Qualified Accountant: 5+ years post qualified experience
  • Experience of leading a finance function as Business Manager in the past
  • Must have excellent Excel and SQL report writing skills
