Sport Wales is looking to appoint a high calibre, proactive, and forward- thinking Finance and Corporate Services Leader, to play a key role in Sport Wales’ strategic development.
As part of the Senior Management team, you will propel Sport Wales through an exciting period of change and evolution, embracing the challenges and opportunities of the next stage in its organisational life cycle and with a clear commitment to the new Vision for Sport in Wales.
Sport Wales is the recognised authority on sport in Wales. As a Welsh Government Sponsored Public Body (WGSB), with an annual budget of c.£40m and employing c. 140 staff across two sites, we advise the government on all matters relating to sport and physical activity.
With an annual budget from the Welsh Government circa £22m, and responsibility for distributing around £19m of National Lottery money each year, we have a clear duty as the National Investor for sport, to ensure that we use these funds to deliver our aspirations to get every child hooked on sport for life and developing a nation of champions.
The impact and benefit that sport has across all sections of society is well documented. As an official supplier of research, we help shape future thinking and delivery and play a key role in contributing to the well- being of future generations. Sport Wales helps unite the voices of sport to tell the powerful story of how it contributes towards creating an active and prosperous nation.
Sport Wales owns and runs two National Performance Centres. Sport Wales National Centre in Cardiff is home to our Institute, the elite performance arm of Sport Wales. Plas Menai National Outdoor Centre near Caernarfon delivers world class water sports and outdoor activities. Our centres are also home to several National Governing Bodies of Sport and other national sports organisations such as the Commonwealth Games Council and the Welsh Sports Association.
With the new Vision for Sport in Wales having only recently been launched in July 2018, it is an exciting time to join the leadership team at Sport Wales, to help develop and deliver a new strategy, and to play a key role in shaping the organisation’s future direction, and success in achieving its key aspirations.

Reporting to the Chief Executive, the Director of Finance and Corporate Services is a key member of the Executive team and will provide strategic Finance, IT, HR and Estates management leadership. The candidate will play a key role in developing and delivering strategy and working closely with all areas of Sport Wales to deliver successful outcomes.
Balancing strategy and operations, the Director of Finance and Corporate Services will provide strong functional leadership and management, including responsibility for the two National Centres, and for developing and sustaining a culture of high performance and accountability.
The Director of Finance and Corporate Services will challenge the status quo where appropriate and drive improvement and change management where necessary, promoting and introducing new ways of working and thinking, especially around commercial activities.
The Director of Finance and Corporate Services will lead on risk management, governance liaison, new capital investment projects and business case appraisals.
This role will interact with a broad range of stakeholders and the Director of Finance and Corporate Services will develop effective working relationship with the Board of Trustees, the Executive Team, Audit Committee and Governing Bodies. Additionally, the candidate will strive to strengthen existing partnerships and forge new relationships, locally, nationally and internationally to support Sport Wales in achieving its full potential.
You will be a professionally Qualified Accountant who can evidence a successful and progressive career to date. You will consider yourself to be a broader than a ‘pure’ finance professional, with a sound understanding of a broad range of corporate services.
You will possess excellent technical finance skills and be a confident communicator with the ability to influence externally and internally across a multi-faceted organisation.
The successful candidate will be a strategic and clear thinker, adept at managing multiple priorities and demands. You will be able to demonstrate a track record of success and achievement to date including change and improvement projects.
The successful candidate will be able to balance a commercial perspective whilst supporting Sport Wales’ strategy and be committed to Sport Wales core values.
